Overview

SS31, also known as Elamipretide, Bendavia, or MTP-131, is a synthetic, cell-penetrating tetrapeptide composed of four amino acids: D-Arg-2′,6′-dimethyltyrosine-Lys-Phe-NH₂. It was developed by Hazel H. Szeto and Peter W. Schiller and is part of the Szeto-Schiller (SS) peptide family . Unlike general antioxidants, SS31 selectively accumulates in mitochondria, particularly binding to cardiolipin, a phospholipid in the inner mitochondrial membrane, stabilizing cristae structure and improving electron transport efficiency
